Shenzhen is a city sharing its border with Hong Kong. From downtown Hong Kong, you can take the KCR train to the border---Lo Wu Station (it takes about 35 minutes and HK$33) and then enter the Immigration Building in order to get into Shenzhen. On the other side of the building, it is the centre of Shenzhen ---- Shenzhen Railway Station with a quite large square.

So it is quite wise to start your journey across China from Shenzhen, where you can get access immediately to the Chinese Railway Service which is safe and at a very reasonable price.
